Working healthily in turbulent times: Why fair working conditions are more important than ever
The world of work is changing. Digitalization, hybrid working models and rising performance expectations are shaping the everyday working lives of many employees. What is seen as progress on the one hand brings new challenges on the other – especially for health in the workplace.
A recent study by the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW), in collaboration with Health Promotion Switzerland and Health & Medical Service AG, clearly shows that more and more employees are confronted with health problems – both mental and physical. High time pressure, unclear responsibilities, social isolation or a lack of appreciation are frequently mentioned. At the same time, the study also points to positive influencing factors: clear framework conditions, opportunities to help shape the work environment and active recognition have a noticeably positive effect on well-being.
Between flexibility and pressure: working from home in the banking sector
These developments are particularly noticeable in the banking sector. Feedback from our members shows that the home office – long seen as a relief – is coming under increasing pressure. At the same time, expectations of constant availability are rising, even outside of official working hours. The boundaries between work and leisure are becoming blurred – a situation that can be stressful in the long term.
Against this background, the question arises as to how working models can be designed that both meet operational requirements and take into account the health of employees.
Key findings of the study at a glance
- Mental stress is on the rise: More and more employees are reporting stress, excessive demands and exhaustion. Unclear responsibilities, constant availability and high expectations are particularly stressful.
- Appreciation boosts motivation and health:
If there is a lack of recognition from superiors or the team, motivation suffers – as does performance in the long term. Conversely, honest appreciation has a strengthening effect and promotes commitment. - Autonomy with clear framework conditions:
The right to have a say and scope for action increase job satisfaction – provided they are accompanied by clear structures. If these are lacking, this can lead to excessive demands on oneself. - Time recording brings transparency:
Traceable time recording is particularly important for flexible forms of work. It creates clarity, protects against undisclosed overtime and helps to maintain a balance.
What can be deduced from this
The study provides valuable input for health-promoting work design. It shows how closely mental wellbeing, motivation and operational conditions are linked. These findings can be an important basis for organizations that focus on healthy and efficient teams in the long term.
